Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations have long been known to have a dramatic impact on the level of happiness and success we enjoy in our lives. Henry Ford, the famous American industrialist and founder of Ford Motor Corporation, said, “Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.” For Ford, like so many others, the key to phenomenal success lay in simply holding firmly to the belief in his own power to achieve greatness. One may often wonder, “Do I, too, possess the ability to transform my life in this way? How can I learn to tap into this amazing power?”

The answer, of course, is YES! The human brain is an amazing thing, with incredible powers just waiting to be harnessed. One of these is the power of positive affirmations. The reason these affirmations work so well is because you are actually rewiring your subconscious to see yourself and the world in a more positive light. From the time that we are children, we are constantly processing information and making assumptions based on that information. The more often an assumption is repeated, the more ingrained and automatic it becomes.
The bad news is that we often pick up damaging perspectives about ourselves and others, often without even realizing it, and these have a very real power to hinder our success and happiness. The good news is that this can all be undone through the power of positive affirmations. All it takes is a little effort and patience, and perhaps some creativity in finding the right affirmations for you. The first step is to take a close look at your life, and determine what false or damaging beliefs are getting in the way of the life you want to have. Do you find yourself giving up on projects because you believe nothing ever works out as planned, or because you simply don’t feel like you’re worth the effort? Do you have a hard time opening up to others because someone has broken your trust, and you expect it to happen again? It’s important to know exactly what kind of barriers you are struggling against, because only then can you know where the force of positive affirmations really needs to be applied. All positive thoughts are good and beneficial, but the more specifically you can tailor them to your personal challenges, the more effective it will be.
Once you identify your target, you should try and come up with a simple, memorable, and highly positive phrase that goes directly against the harmful belief you’ve been carrying. For example, if you avoid interaction with new people because you expect them to look down on you, your positive affirmation might be something like, “I am a likable and admirable person!” Once you have your phrase, memorize it and repeat it as often as possible, no less than three times a day.

Don’t be afraid to get family and friends involved, and ask for their help and support. And most importantly, don’t shy away from a potentially beneficial affirmation simply because it sounds “cheesy,” “lame,” or “childish.” Much of their power comes from their childlike simplicity, so don’t undermine it by insisting on something that sounds “mature” or “realistic.” Open yourself to the child inside you, embrace the energy of simplicity, and let the power of positive affirmations transform your life today!
